The O’Brien family has been shaping the beauty industry in Vermont for more than 60 years. It all began in the early 1950s when William O’Brien, Sr. opened his first salon and quickly became a pioneer in cosmetology. His passion for creativity, education, and people led him to open the Vermont College of Cosmetology in 1964 — later renamed O’Brien’s Training Center — which he operated with his sons, William Jr. and Timothy O’Brien.
For over six decades, our school has proudly maintained its accreditation and commitment to training the next generation of beauty professionals right here in Vermont.
Innovation That Changed the Industry
After years of learning and working alongside their father, William Jr. and Timothy launched Frank Cooper, Inc., introducing fresh, forward-thinking ideas to the salon world. They were among the first to open street-level salons next to high-end retail stores and pioneered the “no appointment necessary” walk-in concept — a breakthrough that forever changed how guests experience salon services.
Since those early years, O’Brien’s Training Center has trained thousands of cosmetologists who’ve built successful careers as hairstylists, salon owners, instructors, platform artists, and beauty industry leaders. Many graduates have stayed part of the O’Brien’s family, continuing to grow their careers in an environment built on mentorship, creativity, and community.
Partnering with Aveda
In 2009, O’Brien’s proudly partnered with Aveda, a global leader in sustainable beauty and education. This partnership marked a new chapter as we became O’Brien’s Aveda Institute, combining our family’s legacy with Aveda’s renowned curriculum, product line, and holistic approach to beauty and wellness.
We expanded in 2014 with the opening of Aveda Institute Williston, allowing us to reach even more students across northern New England. In 2017, both campuses merged under one roof to form our current location — the O’Brien’s Aveda Institute in Williston, Vermont — where students receive hands-on training, professional development, and real-world salon experience.
